2021 CSAP Formal Reception - Aug 22nd, 2021
On August 22, 2021, the Serbian American Chamber of Commerce of Houston held the 2021 Formal Reception celebrating the 10th anniversary of bringing undergraduate students from Serbia to attend their summer internships in Houston. During the ten years, the Serbian American Chamber of Commerce facilitated summer internships for 20 Medical and 36 Computer Science students from Serbia. This has been done through two formal student exchange programs: MEDSAP (with Texas Heart Institute) and CSSAP (with Rice University). Under these programs, the Serbian American Chamber of Commerce assists the students with the logistics of moving to Houston and easing the transition of settling into a new culture.
At the reception, eight students from the CSSAP were introduced. They arrived to Houston in early July from the Technical Science Faculty of Novi Sad and from the School of Electrical Engineering Faculty of Belgrade. They will be working through the end of September on exciting projects at Rice University, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Zoran Budimlic and fellow professors from the Department of Computer Science. At the event, the students briefly presented their work at Rice University and talked about they visited and how they experienced American culture. Prof. Dr. Zoran Budimlic spoke about how his time as a graduate student influenced his decision to bring Serbian interns to Rice University, and about his work with CSSAP students. Our CSSAP alumni, who are now enrolled in the PhD program at Rice University, were also present. One of them, Ms. Anja Conev, introduced the 2021 CSSAP class, and served as MC for the student presentation part of the program.
The event was held at HAAK Winery, where attendees got to enjoy wine from the family-owned business. The owners were introduced at the beginning of the even, and Mr. Raymond Haak spoke about how he decided to go into this business, and how he grew it from its humble beginnings in 1969 to what is is today. The HAAK winery is located in the town of Santa Fe, approximately an hour from downtown Houston.
Mr. Zoran “Frulica” Mitrovic entertained guests with several traditional Serbian folk songs performed on the Serbian wooden flute called “frula”. Mr. Dusan Grubisic, who holds a master’s degree in music from Carnegie Mellon University, sang the American and the Serbian national anthems, as well as some popular Serbian pop and folk songs. Ms. Olivera Jovanovic was the MC for the event.
2019 Cocktail Reception and Formal Dinner - Sept 21st, 2019
During our 2019 Cocktail and Dinner event, over one hundred attendees met another generation of Serbian summer intern students from Rice University. A total of 8 students from the Technical Science Faculty of Novi Sad and from the School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Belgrade arrived at Rice University on a 3-month summer internship. They took on exciting projects under the supervision of Dr Zoran Budimlic and fellow professors from the Department of Computer Science at Rice University.
The students came to Rice University as part of the CSSAP student exchange program, which was established in 2013. The program brings talented Computer Science Students from Serbia to Houston to engage with their American counterparts at Rice University and work with them on cutting edge projects for the duration of the summer. The Serbian American Chamber of Commerce of Houston has signed an agreement with Rice University to assist the students with the logistics of moving to Houston and to ease the transition of settling into a new culture. Since 2013, 28 undergraduate students from Serbia have benefited from CSSAP program.
At the event, the students briefly presented their work at Rice University on neural networks, robotics, artificial intelligence and other areas, and talked about places they visited and how they experienced American culture. Our special guest, Rice University professor Dr. John Mellor-Crummey spoke about how the CSSAP program has progressed over the years and about his work with CSSAP students. Four CSAP alumni students, who are now enrolled in the PhD program at Rice University were also present and joined their younger colleagues on stage. Also present in the audience were members of Houston based IT company ChaiOne and IBM.
Houston folklore ensemble Zavicaj entertained guests with several folk dances from Serbia, while a duo of Vesna i Vladan Mirkovic sang a number of traditional and contemporary Serbian songs.
